I'm currently watching this

I'm currently watching this video, but I'm wondering if this project is too much for a beginner. I have learnt to sew in a class for only a couple weeks. I know how to use the machine and I've made a skirt.

Re: Lessons for Beginners

Dear empress4lyphe,

We do have video lessons for beginners.

You can watch the essential section of our video lessons. They are listed first above all the other lessons. Once you have the basics you can start with simple projects such as the cushion cover, make up pouch. Latter you can do the alterations, such as hemming pants and skirts. Then you can learn pattern drafting and garment sewing.

I try to explain things in a way that even those with basic sewing knowledge can follow the lesson and get good results. Make sure to watch the videos more than once to benefit fully from them.

Happy sewing,

Nehzat

Re: Zipper for Pants

 Dear 1956,

I am please to see that you are happy. Yes soon we will cut and sew from the pants block pattern that we drafted.

In regards to the zipper alteration for pants, we have two different ways of sewing fly zippers on the site right now. These two ways are mostly used for sewing zippers on pants. Here is a link to the lesson page: Fly Zipper Inserting (Sewing) Video Lessons

Your pants might be sewn using one of these styles. Watch the videos and practice a few times, this way you can find out the best way to tackle your repair.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Happy sewing,

Nehzat

Re: Shortening of Sleeves for men's Shirt

Dear Denise,

Thanks for your kind words. To shorten the Sleeves you can do so in two ways either at the armholes or at the cuffs.

The easier way is to shorten the sleeves above the cuffs. However this will make the plackets shorter. If the plackets are not going to be shortened too much, then this is okay. You want to have at least 7 to 8 cm for the placket length.

When fitting make sure the cuff is buttoned and that your husband's arm is straight down. Now pinch and pin the excess fabric in a circle around the elbow area. Pin closely together.

Now measure the excess fabric at the pins and get the average measurement.
Lets say that the average is 6 cm, you would take away 2 cm for comfort and range of movement. This will give you 4 cm for shortening the sleeves. This is done for sleeves that have cuffs, otherwise when you bend the elbows the sleeves would feel short.

To shorten the sleeves at the top we need to have a shirt that is large at the bodice as well. This is because sleeves are tapered and narrow as they go down. Therefore by shortening the sleeves from the top the sleeves will be tight for the armhole. If we are able to take in from the side seams of the shirt, we can sew the sleeves on without any problems.

We will be making a lesson on this topic for men's and women's shirts. On women's shirts we can use a different technique to make the sleeve fit the armhole, without taking in from the bodice side seam.

Thanks,

Nehzat

Adjustable mannequin

Dear Nehzat;

I have my own business of fashion accessories in India and now we are getting into Fine Garment production.I cannot take a break from work so online learning is the best option for me. I do not have any prior knowledge of garment construction. So I am hoping to learn a lot from your subscription. I see that there are a lot of adjustable dress forms available online, but are there some brands that you would reccommend? Since this is for proffessional dressmaking, I want to ensure I get good quality supplies. Also, could you suggest a good manual? Or have you published and books?

Thanks; Rushali
