  • HOW DO I TAKE UP IN THE CROTCH AREA   15 years 37 weeks ago
Re: How Do I Take Up in the Crotch Area

    Dear Phylis,

You can reduce the crotch length by sewing a new seam line on each leg starting at the crotch seam and merging it with the existing seam line at the knee. Then trim the excess fabric.

The amount you can take in on the in seam at the crotch should not be more than 2 cm or 6/8 of an inch. Any more and the front and back inseams will become different lengths.

If this is not enough of an adjustment, then you can remove the waistband and sew it a bit further down or as much as possible before hitting the pockets.

    I hope this helps.

Re: cushion cover invisible zipper Placement

    Hi Doris

Thanks. Because the side that the zipper is sewn to may have a different appearance at the seam line, it is always best to place this side down, this way the other three sides that are similar at the seam lines are more prominent.

If the floral pattern has a design that is directional, meaning that there are stems, leaves or flowers facing a certain direction. The best place to sew the zipper would be on the bottom side of the design, since that side will be placed on the sofa or bed.

Fabric Types for Vogue Wedding Dress V1094 Pattern

    Hi jacqui6719,

Vogues site recommands that you use: "Organdy, Dotted Swiss, Peau de soie and Tissue Taffeta."

Organdy is ( the sheerest cotton cloth made. Combed yarns contribute to its appearance. Its sheerness and crispness are the result of an acid finish. Because of its stiffness and fiber content, it is very prone to wrinkling.)

Dotted Swiss is (A fine, sheer, lightweight, crisp fabric of almost any fiber ....)

Peau de soie is (A soft silk fabric of satin weave having a dull finish)

Tissue Taffeta is (A crisp, lightweight taffeta....Taffeta is made either of silk, rayon or synthetics.  Usually plain with a fine cross rib. It is made in plain colors, fancy prints, watered designs, and changeable effects. It is smooth with a sheen on its surface.)

    Hope this helps.

    fitting pants

hello,I am South African living in Netherlands. To fit a pants,I will do a basic draft, leave wide seam allowances, cut a mock in cheap fabric and then put the pants on and pin it to fit well. It is like making a drape pattern?! always works.Done this for many many items in the past.Good luck!

Pant Pattern Making will be your best shot.

Many people with found that drafting their own pattern, helps them cover the flaws.  I like using the flexible curve ruler to get the shape of my crotch.  Since you have a tummy like most of us, you will have to deepen the curve to accomodate you larger upper hip.

I am not sure how much information I am allow to post.  I have taken a really nice class in pant pattern making and I have had the greatest success.

I have trouble with commerical patterns now, since I am learning pattern making.

You can see some of my work since last year.

Can you state your question another way

You like to know the difference between drafting your pattern and patterns for clothing/fashion?

Not sure what you are asking.  I would love to attempt at answering your question, if I can.

    Thank you.

  • modify skirt pattern   15 years 41 weeks ago
    skirt pattern

You can add more ease from just below the waist to hip.  All you need to do is increase the side seam only.

As you know the slit in the skirt is to help for walking in your skirt.  You can get rid of it by not putting it on your skirt pattern.  The center back seam of your skirt will still allow you place your zipper in it whether or not you place a slit.  I hope you make the skirt full enough for walking ease.

Zippers are placed 7" to 9' from waist.  You can remove the slit from the pattern and make a straight stitch from the end of zipper to hem line at center back.

It sound like you like full skirts.

My measurement is from waist to hip is 6 3/4" (kinda short).

Re: Pouch to slip on the back of a chair

    Hi luv2sew,

The best way to replicate the style of your pouch without taking it apart is to use clear plastic sheets which you can purchase at some fabric stores or even Walmart. The same type which is used to make protective covers for books.

Fill the pouch with books or notebooks, to bring it to its maximum size and make it a solid mass.

Role some pieces of scotch tape and making double sided tape, stick it on the flat sides of the pouch in different places, then place the plastic sheet on the pouch. The tape should hold the plastic steady.

Now you can shape the plastic sheet around the pouch by folding, pining the corners and shaping the plastic like the pouch. Then trim any excess plastic. You can use this same technique for any sections that need a separate pattern.

Since the plastic is transparent, it will let you see under it and let you follow the shape of the pouch.

Next you need to draw lines with a marker wherever you have seam lines, and then cut the sheets following the marker lines.

Place the plastic pieces on sheets of paper and trace them. Use a ruler to straighten the lines if needed. Make sure that the sides which go together are the same length then add the seam allowances for them.

Now you should have a pattern to work with.

    Hope this helps

    Nehzat.

  • how do you turn a sraight skirt sloper into an a line skirt   15 years 42 weeks ago
    Re: Sloper, apple shape

    Hi bettym,

A sloper is the same as a block pattern, which is fitted to the body and does not have any seam allowances. It is used as a basis for all other styles.

What you can do is email me (from the link on the left) to communicate in more detail about your exact measurements, this way I can guide you towards making your own block patterns.

Watch the Bodice and skirt block pattern videos and measure your self the same way I teach in the video.

    Thanks,

    Nehzat

  • how put zipper into a skort when both are attached   15 years 43 weeks ago
Re: how put zipper into a skort when both are attached

    Hi susan1948,

There are different ways to insert a zipper in a skort. Since I am unable to see exactly how this zipper was sewn in your case, what you can do is look and see how the zipper was inserted while you are removing it.

You can also take pictures at different stages as you undo the stitches to be able to replicate the sewing process.

The most common way to insert the zipper in this case would be to baste the zipper opening of both layers together and treat them as one, when sewing in the zipper. However in this case the skirt and shorts should have at least a 2 cm seam sewn together bellow the zipper.

    Hope this helps.

  • Expanding an existing elastic waistband   15 years 43 weeks ago
Re: Expanding an existing elastic waistband

    Hi,

If I was in you shoes, I would  undo the center front stitches by about 20 cm, then cut off about 18 cm the of the elastic band here, then secure the rows of stitches and you are done.

If you want the waist to be less wide, you can undo fewer stitches and cut less elastic, on the center front. This technique will make the pants less puffy over the tummy area, which would make any woman happy.

To make the waist even larger you can do the same for the center back.

Let me know how it goes.
