Greetings!

I was watching the SEWING BY HAND series, and I noticed that there isn't a video to actually show you how to join the pieces by hand-sewing with a strong stitch. I saw videos primarily for hemming and gathering and finishing edges, but not really a strong stitch that would secure the pieces together like they were hand-made, NOT home-made (a garment that don't last long).

Am I missing something?

The invisible stitch - that doesn't look strong enough to hold a sleeve in place, or am I wrong? It seems that there are some stitching that is missing in the series. I guess it is assumed that everyone wants to sew with a machine.

Maybe the stitches I am looking for are tailor stitches. I am aware basting is a tailor stitch, and many of the others. Anyone has a resource for more tailor stitches? I am primarily looking for a strong stitch that will join the two fabrics together.

Thanks in advance
JOY

I FOUND IT! . . . Backstitch

Greetings!

I found the stitch I was looking for. It is the backstitch. I watched the video last week, but forgot about it. Then when I was searching the videos, I assumed that the backstitch was only for securing One's work when you start a stitch. NEVER did it cross my mind that it would be the stitch I was looking for.

I still would like to know if there are any tailor stitches that is not included in the hand-sewing series. If so, what are they and what are there purpose.

Re: I Found it!....Backstitch

Dear Joy,

I'm glad that you were able to find your answer on our site.

Before sewing machines were invented, the back-stitch was used to sew garment pieces together. It is a very strong stitch that resists wear and tear even better than a straight machine stitch.

The strength of the back-stitch is comparable to a straight stretch stitch sewn by sewing machine.

When it comes to hand sewing garments we have covered the stitches you may need in the Hand Sewing Essentials & Tips video lesson. For more hand stitch types you can watch the Hand Embroidery Essentials video lesson.

There are many different types of embroidery stitches around the world. We have covered the main ones in that lesson.

Hope this helps,

Happy sewing,

Nehzat
