Hi Nehzat,

Two of my daughters prefer their skirts to be not at the waist but an inch or two below, so my question is how do I change the skirt block pattern to accommodate  their preference.  I would move the waist line down on the pattern, but what happens to the darts, they wouldn't just move down with the new line, they would change somehow.  Would they be left alone and just become shorter?  Then I would measure where they want the skirt to be to get the size of the new lower waistband. Or would I go back to the lesson on calculating the darts, and use the new lower waistline measurement to calculate new darts.   This is probably so simple that it's a silly question, but I know you'll know the correct way, and I just feel better asking you, instead of assuming I can figure it out myself.

I'll come up with the same situation when I draft the pants for them also.  So I believe we do everything we see on the video, except start the waistline lower.

Thank you, so very much, for your help,

Carol

Re: Lowering the rise of the Skirt or pants patterns

Dear sewmama,

Yes you will need to draft the pattern as you see it on the site for the skirt and the pants. Tape the darts closed. Then you measure and mark below the waistline by the amount you want. Mark about every 1" apart to help you draw the line easily.

Now you can add the seam allowances. As you guessed this technique will shorten the darts.

You need to measure below the waistline for the waistband as well. Measure parallel to the waistline by the amount you deducted from the top of the pattern.

Happy sewing,

Nehzat
