Ripping Seams on Jersey Fabric

Hi All,

I am having a seemingly strange problem. I am making teeshirts and I have a couple different types of jersey fabrics. One is a very thin, white fabric that sews beatifully (100% cotton). The next is a bit thicker, brown fabric that RIPS very badly after being put through the serger. It is also 100% cotton.However, the ripping in greatly diminished when I sew the fabric with my home sewer? I can't understand why the brown is doing this and the white is completely fine, same thread. I am also haveing the same problem with another jersey fabric that is a bamboo and cotton blend. I am also using a ball point needle. Originally I was not, so I then switched after reading up on it a bit. Alas, same problem. I need help, maybe it's the thread? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hi Abigail

Sometimes jersey fabric have tighter stitches and do not have as much give, when the needle goes trough them, therefore the fabric rips when sewn by machine.

Try using a thinner needle or finer thread. You can also try lowering the thread tension to see if it makes a difference.
